Writing is the articulation of thinking. Indeed, every academic discipline relies on critical thinking, careful reading, and articulate writing.
The Department of Writing Studies, formed in July 2007, is a unique department charged with overseeing undergraduate writing instruction, curriculum, and research campus-wide. The department’s efforts will make world-class, comprehensive writing instruction a distinguishing feature of a baccalaureate degree from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.
Writing studies also encompasses the former Department of Rhetoric and its degrees in scientific and technical communication. Ours is one of the oldest and most established scientific and technical communication programs in the nation.
Writing is an essential part of an undergraduate education. By supporting the University’s writing initiative, your gift touches every undergraduate student.
Your tax-deductible contribution also supports the research and training of graduate students who will become our next generation of practitioners and professors. It gives our faculty resources for enlarging knowledge and understanding. It helps to build and sustain the University of Minnesota’s reputation for excellence in writing instruction.
Rhetoric-Technical Communications Fund [#3004]: Provides support for students and/or faculty programs and projects in the Department of Writing Studies, to be distributed at the chair’s discretion.
