Writing is the articulation of thinking. Indeed, every academic discipline relies on critical thinking, careful reading, and articulate writing.

The Department of Writing Studies, formed in July 2007, is a unique department charged with overseeing undergraduate writing instruction, curriculum, and research campus-wide. The department’s efforts will make world-class, comprehensive writing instruction a distinguishing feature of a baccalaureate degree from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.

Writing studies also encompasses the former Department of Rhetoric and its degrees in scientific and technical communication. Ours is one of the oldest and most established scientific and technical communication programs in the nation.
