History

The Department of Writing Studies, in the College of Liberal Arts, opened in July 2007, reflecting the University of Minnesota’s commitment to writing instruction calibrated to the needs of 21st century students. The department was formed through a merger of faculty, staff, and programs in the Department of Rhetoric, General College, Post Secondary Teaching and Learning, the Center for Writing, and English Composition. We are an academic department rich in teaching and research talent, with 12 tenured/tenure track faculty, 20 full time instructors, and degrees from the bachelor's to the doctorate.
